Tehran Iran

Tehran is Iran’s capital and largest city, situated in the northern part of the country at the foothills of the Alborz Mountains on the southern edge of the central Iranian plateau, making it a major geographic hub in north-central Iran. The area has been settled since at least the early medieval period, with Tehran emerging as a village near the ancient city of Ray before becoming Persia’s capital under the Qajar dynasty in the late 18th century.

Today, Tehran’s city proper is home to around 9.7 million people, while the broader metropolitan region, including suburbs and adjacent counties, is estimated to exceed 14 million residents, making it one of the largest urban areas in the Middle East. The population is ethnically diverse, predominantly Persian with sizable Azeri, Kurdish, and other minority communities, and the majority of residents identify as Muslim, mainly Twelver Shia, alongside smaller Sunni, Christian, Jewish, Zoroastrian, and other religious minorities.
