Tel Aviv is located on the eastern Mediterranean coast of Israel, just north of the ancient port city of Jaffa, and occupies a central position on the country’s coastal plain. On the map of Israel, it lies between Haifa to the north and Ashdod to the south, serving as a major economic and cultural hub. Founded in 1909 as a Jewish neighborhood of Jaffa, Tel Aviv grew rapidly during the 20th century and later merged with Jaffa to form Tel Aviv–Yafo.
