The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a political and military alliance established to promote collective defense and security among its member countries. NATO was founded on April 4, 1949, when twelve countries from North America and Western Europe signed the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington, D.C. The founding members included the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and several other European nations. The alliance was created in response to growing tensions following World War II and the expansion of Soviet influence across Eastern Europe.

At the heart of NATO is Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which states that an attack against one member is considered an attack against all members. This principle of collective defense has been the foundation of NATO since its creation. During the Cold War, NATO’s primary mission was to deter military aggression from the Soviet Union and maintain stability in Europe. Following the end of the Cold War in 1991, NATO expanded its role to include crisis management, peacekeeping operations, counterterrorism efforts, cybersecurity cooperation, and partnerships with countries around the world.

Over the decades, NATO has grown significantly, expanding from its original twelve members to 32 member countries across Europe and North America. Major enlargements took place after the collapse of the Soviet Union, with many Central and Eastern European countries joining the alliance. More recently, Finland became a member in 2023 and Sweden joined in 2024, further strengthening NATO’s presence in Northern Europe. Today, NATO remains one of the world’s most important security organizations, working to safeguard the freedom and security of its members through political cooperation, military collaboration, and collective defense.

The NATO Summit in Ankara in 2026 marked an important moment in the history of the Alliance, bringing together leaders from all 32 NATO member countries to discuss the future of transatlantic security and cooperation. Held on July 7–8, 2026, the summit focused on strengthening collective defense, increasing military interoperability, and addressing emerging global challenges such as cyber threats, hybrid warfare, and regional instability. As one of NATO’s key members since 1952, Türkiye hosted the summit in its capital city, Ankara, highlighting its strategic position between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The summit gathered heads of state and government, foreign and defense ministers, military officials, and representatives from international organizations. Discussions covered NATO’s eastern and southern security challenges, support for partner nations, defense spending commitments, and the Alliance’s long-term strategic priorities. The 2026 NATO Summit in Ankara also showcased Türkiye’s role within NATO and emphasized the importance of unity among member states in an increasingly complex global security environment. The event represented another milestone in NATO’s history of cooperation, collective defense, and political dialogue among allied nations.
